Khara Pongal and Sweet Pongal



Pongal is a popular dish from south India. There are 2 versions of Pongal a sweet version and a savoury version called Ven Pongal or Khara Pongal. Both the Pongal dishes have the same base that is cooked moong dal and rice. The Khara Pongal has the name itself indicates is a savoury dish which has a tempering of cashew and basic spices. Khara Pongal is prepared as a breakfast dish and is usually served with a sambar on the top. Khara Pongal is nutritious and delicious and is very simple to prepare, the tempering of mustard, cumin, ginger, curry leaves, green chilli, cashew nuts, asafoetida, turmeric, and coconut pieces brings out the beautiful flavors in the Khara Pongal. It’s a wholesome breakfast dish and kids will love it too for its yumminess and creamy texture.


Sweet Pongal is usually prepared during festivals like Sankranti or Pongal festivals, which is a harvest festival that comes in the mid of January every year. Sweet Pongal is a sweet dish where the moong dal and rice are cooked with jaggery and milk. Coconut milk can also be used here to make it more aromatic and flavourful. The sweet Pongal is topped with cashew and raisins fried in ghee to make it more festive and delicious. During Pongal, this sweet dish is prepared using freshly harvested rice. The sweetness from jaggery and the flavors of moong and rice tastes awesome. This festive sweet dish can be prepared for any celebrations or pooja at home. It is very simple and turns out yummy with all the ghee, milk, jaggery, and crunch of cashews and raisins.

The state of Karnataka was born on the 1st of November in the year 1956. On this day (a declared state-holiday), the Karnataka state flag is hoisted by the Chief Minister of the state and the governor addresses the people of the state. It is a common sight to see the official yellow and red state flag flying on various government and private establishments.


Typically, a cultural gala is organised in a large stadium and many awards are handed out to individuals who were exemplary in their respective fields. The highest state honour is the Rajyotsava award which is handed out by the Chief Minister.
