Hello Readers,

Today is 14th day of our blog.  I hope you will like it.  So here we go………

Places to visit in Karnataka for travellers

 Kodagu(Coorg)

Kodagu (Coorg), the thickly wooded grandeur on the Western Ghats, is the most beautiful hill station of Karnataka. It occupies an area of 4,102 square kilometers (1,584 sq mi) in the Western Ghats of southwestern Karnataka. Kodagu is well known in the world for coffee and its “brave warriors”. Madikeri is the headquarters of Kodagu. Kodagu is home to the native speakers of Kodava language.

Much of Kodagu is used for agriculture. Characteristically and historically, paddy fields are found on the valley floors, with Coffee and pepper agro-forestry in the surrounding hills mainly near Madikeri. The most common plantation crop is coffee, especially Coffe robusta variety. Kodagu is the second coffee production region in India, after the Baba Budangiri hills in Chikkamagaluru district. Coffee revenue helped Kodagu to become one the richest districts in India.

Kodagu is considered rich with wildlife and has three wildlife sanctuaries and one national park: the Brahmagiri, Talakaveri, and Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuaries, and the Nagarhole National Park, also known as the Rajiv Gandhi National Park.

Yesterday’s Fun Corner’s Information

Makara Sankranthi

ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ಸಂಕ್ರಾಂತಿ ಹಬ್ಬದ ಶುಭಾಶಯಗಳು.

Happy Makara Sankranthi to everyone.

Makara Sankranthi is celebrated in various parts of the Indian subcontinent to observe the day which marks the shift of the sun into ever-lengthening days. Makara Sankranthi is one of the few ancient Indian festivals that has been observed according to solar cycles, while most festivals are set by the lunar cycle of the Hindu calendar.

The festival is predominantly a harvest festival and is celebrated throughout India, from north to south and east to west. Since India and Indians believe in Unity in Diversity, this festival is celebrated in different ways across different states. While Makar Sankranthi is most popular in West India and down south, the festival is also known as Pongal in Tamil Nadu and in the north, it is celebrated as Lohri. Uttarayan, Maghi, Khichdi, Suggi Habba are some other names of the same festival. Makar Sankranthi generally marks the beginning of the Kumbh Mela in Uttar Pradesh while in South India, in Kerala, one of the most austere and difficult pilgrimages of Shabrimala ends on this auspicious day.

While in Andra Pradesh and Telangana, it is celebrated by distributing til-gul (sesame and jaggery laddoos or chikkis), in Karnataka, distribute a mixture of til and jaggery among other ingredients like coconut, Groundnuts and roasted gram, which is popularly known as “Ellu-bella”. We also prepare Sakkare acchu (sugar candy moulds) in various shapes and include them in the plate with ellu-bella, a sugarcane, bananas, haldi and Kumkum, and a small gift that could be useful in daily life. In most parts of Karnataka, young girls and newly wedded couples visit their near and dear ones distributing Ellu-bella and seeking their blessings. This ritual is called as “Ellu beerodu”.

At this time of the year, weather will be cold and dry, the main ingredients we use to prepare the dish for this festival is til/sesame seeds and jaggery along with nuts and coconut, which makes it an absolute health snack for the winter.
